The next design trend could be “stackable”. Lately I’ve noticed a number of magazines and stores carrying more and more items that are either made up of stacked elements or are themselves stackable. From lamps that utilize stacks of materials or items, to furniture that can be stacked up, this seems to be a current trend. How long such a design theme will last is unknown, but these things typically take hold for a while then suddenly a major design magazine will catch on and say something like “2010 is the year of the stackables!”. Then the trend will reach a zenith, spurred on by homeowners who want to look trendy. Eventually Target will begin featuring these items, and then the inevitable demise of the movement will occur.
How do you avoid owning items that will be considered passe, or retro? Well, you can either NOT join in the trend, or you can make sure to buy items that have other lasting design elements. Trying to find elements that will stand the test of time can be difficult, but not impossible. Staying with classic lines or materials is one way to ride out a trend. Non-patterned fabrics in neutral or primary colors, medium toned woods, and square corners, stay around from fad to fad. Traditional colors such as forest green, sage, browns, cream, black, gray tones, burgundy, slate blue and cobalt are all everlasting and rarely go out of style (they just take a back seat to the colors-of-the-moment).
So jump on the trend train, or let it zoom passed you, it’s your decision. However, some of these items can be sooooooo cooooool!

I want that dresser/chest of drawers! That is just too fantabulous!!!
