A Weekend Packed with Ideas and Art

Monday, April 18th, 2011

What a great weekend.  So much to do, and so little time to get it all done.  Friday was the TEDxCLE event.  As much as I wanted to go, I missed my small window to buy a ticket and it was sold out!  Still, I heard good things about it…  I know that last year’s event was a winner and I was truly hoping to find a loose unused ticket somewhere in my network.  It was also the Green Dream.  The Green Dream is NE Ohio’s largest Green Business Showcase and is held every year by the students of Beachwood High School and Junior Achievement.  The Funds they raise go toward the Green Classroom a green education space inside the High School.  It was another successful year!

Saturday morning was a meeting of the Sustainable Business Incubator group at Gardens Under Glass in the Galleria.  We talked about community engagement, marketing, the business development plan and Earth Day events.  We also prepped our mini terrarium “Gardens Under Glass” to give away at the Earth Fest on Sunday.  The other Earth Day event that is planned is the Local Foods Extravaganza that will be held Thursday at the Galleria.  This event is being coordinated and organized by the Community Greenhouse Partners-a wonderful group dedicated to growing and provided healthful produce for Cleveland underprivileged families.

I only wish there were more time, as I was going to share with them the renderings that we produced for the Local Foods Restaurant Incubator and the NE Ohio Green Business Incubator.

The idea behind the Local Foods Restaurant Incubator was to allow entrepreneurs and restaurateurs the ability to try out new concepts in a cost effective way.  By negotiating good short term leases, folks who want to open a restaurant could try out their recipes, concept, etc in a way that is effective.  They could build momentum while making a little cash, fine tune food costs, plan menu items, all while still finding or designing a restaurant space.  What’s more, they could negotiate better pricing by partnering with other small restaurants, build a catering arm, or create a whole lot of buzz before their doors ever open.  To read more, check out the flyer we created here-and share it with that chef in your life as we try to build an even better food scene.

We also have been working on the Green Business Incubator idea.  The plan here is to band green businesses together to share expenses and build synergy in one space.  By having several like minded individuals in a single office setting, they can share ideas, clients, expenses, marketing, even host events together.  One or two person firms could have access to things that are usually reserved for larger companies.  The long term goal is to bring an assortment of green businesses to the Galleria, where they would have access to meeting space, green restaurants, educational components, and even test out ideas like solar panels where they could potentially monitor them all the time-all inside and under a single glass roof.

You can read about more of the concept and advantages here.

After the meeting, we whizzed off to Brecksville to meet up with friends, and then it was off to Akron.  The University of Akron was hosting an exhibition called Collider 3: Transform and was truly interesting.  It was the final day of the exhibit, so we had the place mostly to ourselves.  The entire exhibit was interactive-which is the art that I love.  One room had a projection of a woman in red wrapped in ribbons and as you moved about the space, the projection moved and changed, depending on how you moved about the room.  There was another that was a projection of a website and a large touch pad so you could work with it.  If you missed this project, not to worry, you can access it at wefeelfine.org. This program goes out to the web and mines blogs for phrases like “I feel” and returns them in an interactive data stream that gives interesting visuals and demographics.  WE then went by the Akron Museum of Art to check out the architecture of the building.  We had planned on seeing the Escher exhibit, but instead we were hungry for a bite to eat.

After the art, we stopped off for some of the best Mexican food that I have seen in a while at Rancheros Taqueria at 284 Cuyahoga Falls Ave-at Dayton St. in Akron.  If you like authentic Mexican food with a ton of flavor, I highly recommend this place.  Unobtrusive, and poorly decorated, this is the kind of place you might pass on if you judge by appearances.  Don’t!  The food is great!

Then it was time to high tail it back home to get ready for ART CARES.  Art Cares is one of the few really high class events that get to attend every year.  I always donate a couple of art pieces and they always seem to sell.  I am happy to be a part of this event, and happy that I am always asked.  The event was packed this year, and they netted some good returns.  I am sure that has a lot to do with John Farina and Adam Tully who were the key organizers for this year’s event.  Kudos to them and all their hard work.  I also got to hang out with friends and hear the awesome Lounge Kitty.  I am already thinking of what I can create for next year’s event.

If you have never been, you should go as it is one of the few times to get great art at reasonable prices, while having the best party time of the year!

Sunday was Earth Fest, the Earth Day event at the zoo.  I always go and work a table for some event.  This year, while Bud worked the NE Ohio chapter of the USGBC table, I was at the Gardens Under Glass table.  I was lucky, as were in a nice cozy worm environment inside, while Bud froze in the non-profits tent.  Of course, I got my reusable bags from Wal-Mart, chatted with Rebecca at Planet Green and Green Clean, and hung out with Trevor Clatterbuck of Fresh Fork Market.  Unfortunatley the high winds caused them to close at least one tent, and some of the events were cancelled.  Still, I got my free water bottle and hung out with all my greenie cohorts!

Our sign language class was cancelled, and I was actually quite relieved, as I needed the extra rest!  All in all, a great weekend…What did you do?

Monday reflections

Monday, April 19th, 2010

Earth Day is later this week, but that did not stop most people from celebrating early. Most Earth Fest activities were held this weekend in advance of the big day. That was the case with Earth Fest at the Zoo. We volunteered at the NEO USGBC table for a couple of hours and had a good time. We arrived a couple of hours early and saw the exhibits and wandered the grounds. It was most of the usual suspects, like the Green Triangle, Nature’s Bin, and Cleveland Bioneers. Of course, there are always some people at these kinds of events that make no sense to me-like the Radical Communist Party and the Colleges who have no real green program. But hey, it is a party and everyone is welcome. I do find much of these kinds of events very ironic, though. Just like so many other green events, every table is loaded with paper and other freebies that are really not necessary. While working at the table, there was a bowl of candy out. It attracted plenty of children who have no real interest in the USGBC or green building. Still, armed with their free grocery bag from Wal Mart, they picked up several brochures as well as their free gobstoppers. I remember the days as a kid when we would go to the state fair. We would get our free bag and go through the exhibition hall and see just how many free brochures we could fit in the bags. It all would go in the trash when we got home. If we were particularly successful in our endevours, it often got tossed right on the fairgrounds as it became to heavy to lug around, as we wanted to ride the rides. It got me to thinking about waste and recycling, and I noticed there were no paper recycling stations set up anywhere on the grounds. While I can understand that the zoo has no need for paper recycling on the grounds in general, as usually there is little paper to collect that isn’t stained with burger grease or what not. Still, it seems to me that they could easily have gotten some bins for the day. At any event, there are people who are always trying to shove paper at me, and when I try to turn them down, they look hurt. I would expect less of this at an Earth Day event, but that was not the case. Still more intriguing was the cheap crap that was being given away, much of which was not going to even survive the day, let alone avoid landfill. This is the irony of planet saving and baby steps. We were given stainless steel water bottles emblazoned with the slogan to drink local drink tap. While I support the sentiment and especially the reduction of plastic water bottles, the irony of it is the water bottles were NOT made locally. In fact they were made in China-probably from steel that came from materials in the US that was shipped there, processed into steel bottles and shipped back here for our event. At least there were plastic bottle recycling stations for the only other beverage that I had while there, and I added a selection of reusable bags to my arsenal. I have managed to not bring new plastic bags into our house in over a year, so I am a happy camper.
I think the Earth Day Coalition could take a page from the play book of a homeowner named Rollie in Cleveland Heights. I accompanied Bud and our friend Judy to a GLSEN event at this lovely Cleveland Heights colonial, but was most impressed with the recycling efforts they were making. Lined up were a series of trash cans, each individually labelled and properly lined with blue bags for their recycling products. One for each kind of material and a staging area for sorting, I was so moved that I think a tear came to my eye. I admit that I don’t know much about the program in place in Cleveland Heights, but this kitchen was obviously making use of every bit of it!

The other event that I attended over the weekend that was stunning was the Art Cares event, a benefit for the AIDS Taskforce of Greater Cleveland. I always donate a piece or two to this worthy cause and am pleasantly surprised when they sell in the pre sale. The event was held at the Saigon Plaza on the edge of Gordon Square and was a huge success. Packed with all sorts of people, art pieces flew out the door like there was no tomorrow. This is the preeminent arts event of the year for the Taskforce and I am always proud to be a part of it. My buddy Rebecca had a huge part to play in its success this year, so hats off to her and her efforts. Catered by Marigold, I think, there was plenty of food and plenty to drink-the easy way to open hard fast wallets. We sneaked out as the live auction began, but hear it was a huge success. Congrats to everyone involved for putting on another fantastic show!

What are YOU doing for Earth Day?

Friday, February 19th, 2010

Have you ever dreamed of making a difference?  It doesn’t just happen, you have to make it happen. Green Fest is a very new event, and a perfect example of how you can get involved and do something cool. This will be just the second year, and the reponse by the community is truly exciting. It started with two Moms having coffee, talking about their passion for recycling and “doing their part.” Wanting to do something to raise awareness and unite the community, they started thinking about putting on an “event” to teach North Ridgeville citizens about eco-friendly lifestyles. And thus, Green Fest was born.  Last year, they planned Green Fest with the help of the Parks and Recreation Dept, and several others who were willing to pitch in and give back. It was a highly successful event for such a small community, and with absolutely no operating budget. Everything was either donated by individuals or organizations that believe in going green. It just goes to show what you can do when you believe in something!  This year, Green Fest 2010 has a tiny budget, a great committee of committed individuals, and lots of support from the community. They hope to get bigger and better each year, delivering the message of environmentalism to all of the southern suburbs.Want to help?  They’d love to have you come to the event, make a donation, or offer any advice or tidbits of information they could use. ll an eco product or offer an environmentally friendly service?  Maybe you can get a table and show off your company.

North Ridgeville’s Green Fest committee is a branch of Friends of the Parks, a non-profit organization of local citizens who share and foster the idea to support and better the parks and recreational areas of North Ridgeville. Gandhi once stated: “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” This quote explains how North Ridgeville’s Green Fest Committee came to be. In April of 2009 five local moms hosted Green Fest to help educate their community about making sustainable choices to preserve their children’s future. With only 3 ½ months of collaboration, Green Fest showcased 20 local North East Ohio earth friendly vendors. Amazed by the impact that the Green Fest 2009 had we decided in August of 2009 to open the group up to recruit local volunteers. Since then we have been joined by several diverse community members. During the last several months our committee has been diligently working to recruit volunteers, vendors, and donations. The Green Fest committee’s current fundraising goal is to raise funding to purchase recycle containers to be installed in each of North Ridgeville’s local parks. Once we have accomplished this goal, we then plan to reassess and research future earth friendly opportunities that can continue to bring North Ridgeville to the fore front of green living. We are currently gathering interested volunteers, vendors, and donations (reusable bags, coupons, samples, advertisements and monetary), and entertainment for this worthy event.

Let’s face it, making a difference is never easy.  But then, nothing worthwhile ever really is.  But if a couple of moms can get together over coffee and start a green revolution in their own town, what can you do?

Love your mother!

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

It is that time again-time to honor your mother.  Yes, Mother’s Day is just around the corner, but I am talking about another mother-Mother Earth.  As the season changes, and we start seeing all the green shoots and planting our veggies, we should all be thinking about how we can make a impact for the better on our planet.  Yes, Earth Day is next week, and this weekend starts off all the festivities. Here are just a few things that are going on.

Tomorrow, we will be at the Green Dream at the Beachwood Community Center (25325 Fairmont Blvd).  This should be a great event.  It is a chance to see a variety of ways to live a little lighter on the planet.  Their site may have been compromised, so I won’t provide a link, but the event runs from 1-7 pm.  It is a chance to see what Beachwood High School’s marketing students are doing to make this a greener place to live.  Fox 8 will be there with Kickin’ it with Kenny in the morning, so tune in for a chance to see some of the vendors. The event is free, but the goal is to raise money. Last year, the students made enough money to make over a classroom and made it a “green classroom.” If a group of students can do these kinds of green things, then what are YOU doing?

Tomorrow evening is a Earth Day kick off celebration for Tremont Electric. This is a great local company that has the lofty goal of providing clean renewable energy. How? Kinetics. I like it! Free, carbon free electricity that could be accessed by millions who are nowhere near the grid! Their personal energy generator will power things like cell phones and iPods, just by walking or running. Not only is it a great way to charge your devices, but it’s a great way to get peoplw off their butts and on their feet!

If you are in Slavic Village on the 18th, stop by the Cleveland Central Catholic for luch. They are hosting a work, play and live green summit. I like what is going on in Slavic Village. Another of Cleveland’s neighborhoods is trying to reinvent itself, and they are looking at sustainability to make their area a better place to live and work. Stop by and show them support.

The 17th and the 18th give you the chance to see another kind of film festival. The Banff Mountain Film Festival is playing at the Allen Theater. It looks like a great time. From the Playhouse Square website:

Hot on the heels of the largest, and one of the most prestigious, mountain festivals in the world, the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour has hit the road, with stops planned in about 285 communities and 30 countries across the globe!

The tour makes a stop in Cleveland for an exclusive showing in Northern Ohio, starting at 7:30 p.m. each night. The Cleveland showing of the film festival showcases different films and a reception each evening.

Another event that I am excited about is the Art House Garage Sale. Nothing is greener than buying used (except not buying at all). And how often do you get to shop and make a difference for a good cause? Art House offers classes to the public in things like ceramics and printmaking. Always wished you could sculpt or paint? This is a great way to learn that new skill. Fundraisers like these are how Art House keeps their classes affordable. Go visit, and take home a previously used treasure! The Art House is located at 3119 Denison and the sale runs from 10-4, Saturday only!

Of course, the Big Daddy of them all is Earth Fest 2009. Every year it just gets better and better. Ride the Clean Air bus from Public square and get in for free! FREE! Now that is a recession buster deal that we can all live with. This looks to be one of the greenest weekend of the year for Cleveland, so get out and enjoy it! But take an umbrella, as Saturday may be a little rainy-after all, April Showers bring May flowers.
