Events and things…

Saturday, August 7th, 2010

These are the dog days of summer.   I admit that I have been lax in my blog postings for the last few weeks, but as the back to school sales ads are reminding me, it will soon be fall and I am keen to enjoy as much of what is left of summer as I can.  There are plenty of things to do and keep us busy, all the same.

I have to give a shout out to my friends Jared and David.  They are celebrating their birthdays today.  They are going all out, but rather than make it all about them, they are doing something cool and unique.  They are doing a celebration that will the Cleveland Animal Protective League. They have asked that in lieu of gifts, guests bring cans of pet food for the APL.  They are selling “spank tickets” as well and the money will all go to the APL as well.  Where is this event?  Why the Happy Dog, naturally.  These days we are so wrapped up in our own lives, that we forget about the charities and non profits that so sorely need alternative funding these days.  But I am proud to have so many friends who look at these celebrations as a way to benefit the community, rather than themselves.

Tuesday is an interesting event that I was invited to by Kim Burant and my friends at ClearCut Promotions.   Kim is promiting cool and exciting events around the Cleveland area.  ClearCut Promotions is the company that put together the “Fearless” event.  GQ Magazine, Bombay Sapphire and the USBG presents The Most Inspired Bartender Competition.  This is a nationwide search for Bombay Sapphire mixologists.  Private party to be held Tuesday August 10th 8-11pm at the Van Swearingen Archade at Hyde Park Steakhouse Downtown Cleveland.  I think it will be a good time.  I would invite you all to join me, but this is a private party with a limited guest list…. I feel so exclusive, ooohhh.  I will tell you that you should email Kim@clearcutpromotions.com and ask if there is space, and to be on her mailing list for upcoming events.  Be sure to look for them on Facebook, too!

Also upcoming is the next Yumm event by Stove Monkeys.  I have enjoyed going to these events and trying our cool and crazy foods.  Last month, I was in Seattle, so I am doubly looking forward to August’s event.  This month it will be on a Friday, August 27th from 5-9pm.  Every month these events get more packed and more exciting, so be sure to get your advanced tickets! Check out the article at Cleveland Scene.

Lat week was the midyear event for the NE Ohio chapter of the USGBC.  I try to attend all of these events.  Not only are they all fun, but I like the people in this group.  It is always a good thing to hang with others who have the same passions and sensibilities as you.  If you are interested in the built environment at all, you should consider joining, or even volunteering a little for this great group.  Michelle Kilroy is the chapter coordinator and she could always use some help with a committee, planning an event, organizing sponsors, or even just simple filing.  And you get first hand notice of events like this one at the Harp:

Then on Thursday, August 12th, I will be attending (and speaking) at an event for E4S:

Zero Waste Office Best Practices -

August 12, 2010: 8:30 am – 11 am Trinity Commons - 2230 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio 44115

Parking is free.  Entrance is off of Prospect Ave.

Purpose:

•           Inform business leaders and office managers about opportunities to reduce waste in the office environment

•           Inspire business leaders to set zero waste goals

•           Connect leaders to resources that can help them get to zero waste in their office

•           Provide actionable first steps, next steps

I hate to speak in public.  That being said, you cannot let your fears in life hold you back, so anytime I am asked, I always agree.  It usually ends up just fine, as it did when I presented at the annual meeting of the Ohio Museums Association near Columbus.  Tickets are only $25 for members of E4S, so come and see if I crash and burn!  Besides, there will be plenty of other great speakers at this event!

Monday is the monthly Lake Erie Moose Society meeting.  This is a great group of bloggers, developers, and overall web enthusiasts.  I love to go to this meeting when I can.  Not only is it a great group of people, but it is usually at the Barking Spider Tavern in University Circle-a great hangout.  Furthermore, I never leave a meeting without some new ideas, new information, or a new friends.  If you are interested, join the Ning group or the Facebook page for monthly invites.  This group welcomes all types, and experience ranges from people thinking about blogging, to owners of some of the longest running blogs in the area.  Stop by for a beer and check it out!

Later in the month is the Eco Tuesday meeting.  September is shaping up to be quite a month as well.  The next Sustainability Summit is coming.  Ingenuity Fest and the advanced energy showcase are also that month, but more on those later.  Mark you calendars for this month’s events.

The Future of Cleveland is Here!

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

To change Cleveland for the better, we need new ideas.  While there has been tremendous growth in the area of sustainability, clean energy and the like, I think our biggest growth area has been in the food world.  We Clevelanders love to eat, that much is certain.  When I moved here, it seemed all a bit old school.  You could find a great greasy burger, chili cheese fries, or corned beef sandwich within any neighborhood it seemed.  But over the past decade, I have seen Cleveland’s food seem grow and elevate itself in a way that I never thought possible.    A small restaurant with a local following, buoyed Chef Michael Symon to Iron Chef fame and a series of new ventures around the city and beyond.  Chef Jonathan Sawyer started a new green concept and made it to Food and Wind Magazine Fame.  Chef Brandt Evans of Kosta’s went on to open a series of great lodge-themed American Funk Fusion restaurants across the country, known as the Blue Canyon Kitchen and Tavern, and his charm and wit have made him a local celebrity.  Bob Sferra, Rocco Whalen, Steve Schimoler, Ellis Cooley and many more are fast making Cleveland the culinary capital of the Great Lakes.  I remember when Tremont was Lola’s, Kosta’s, and a handful of loud grungy eateries.  Now, you can’t a neighborhood with more great restaurants in the region.  E 4th Street is becoming a mecca for weekend dining and has attracted large scale chains like House of Blues.  Places like Melt, Momocho and others are being featured on television all the time.  But while established chefs are opening great hot spots, there is an underground chef culture that should not be ignored.

These emerging chefs and their contemporaries are coming up with new and innovative ideas to intrigue us.  I first found out about some of these cool folks when I won a T-shirt from the Cleveland Foodie blog.  A hip, fun tee from Stove Monkeys.  Always a fan of local business and food, I wrote about them on several occasions.  So when I heard about their molecular gastronomy event, I was in!  This has turned into a monthly event that is evolving into a culinary showpiece for foodies interested in the odd, but delightful world of interesting food innovation by Chef Matthew Mytro, Mike Schoen and their buddies. (Be sure to follow their exploits on Facebook!)  Then I was introduced to another great company, Dim and Den Sum.  Chefs Chris Hodgson and Jeremy Esterly are changing the way we look at street food in this town.  Veggie and pulled pork tacos, meatball sandwiches, tater tots with exotic spices and toppings are just a sampling of what you might find on their crazy painted food truck.  This truck is just the springboard to a bigger future… a fleet of trucks, a restaurant, who knows?

So when I got the invitation from my new pal, Kimberly Burant and her new company Clear Cut Promotions for an event at the Velvet Dog, I HAD to go.  The event was called “Fearless” and it featured a wide range of participants.  There were cocktails being shaken up by Darko Marinkovic of Chinato that were mixed with exotic elixers from The Lounging Gourmet.  I especially liked The Duchess and The Duke: an exotic combination of gin, lavender, and cucumber.

Then came the interesting fare!  I started off with a fantastic crostini topped with smashed peas, water cress and pickled lamb’s heart.  It was unbelievable and I could have eaten an entire plateful.  The chewy texture of the meat was softened by the pickling and the smashed peas were out of this world.  I want to try and duplicate this myself!

Then I tried the “Superworm:”  basically, if you have ever eaten the worm in the bottom of a bottle of tequila (and who hasn’t?), then you get the idea,  This was a tequila and lime jello shot with a super worm inside.  My new friend Janet of Metromix tried one and it freaked her out a bit, but I was non-plussed.  I followed that with other tasty delicacies, like the braised antelope short rib taco and the wild boar bacon fritter with tomato coulis.  Then there was the “catch of the day.”  Deep fired hissing cockroaches.  It was the talk of the evening, “would you?”  ”could you?”  ”did you see that?” and “Oh my God!” I have to admit, I saw no reason to eat this giant bug.  I figured that it would not add at all to my life experiences and who cares that I could say that I ate a cockroach.  Even if some places consider them a delicacy, the allure of a back street restaurant in China or Indonesia is not quite the same as the rooftop of the Velvet Dog in Ohio.  I enjoyed watching others, though!

So while eating cockroaches may not be your thing, the fact remains that young and vibrant talent abounds in this town.  Starting new trends and creating an entire sub culture of interesting ideas that will make the rest of the country take more notice of us.  Bringing Cleveland back to its hight and rightful place as the capital of the Great Lakes will take time, ingenuity, and fresh clever ideas, and I am proud to have had the chance to meet and hang out with some of the fresh new thinkers that will be a part of it!

It’s Hot in Cleveland! Win this shirt!

Facebook darling Betty White is back on TV.  Her new show is an original program from TV Land called Hot in Cleveland.

I love Betty White.  She has played so many great characters over the years and has the ability to be funny when playing straight lines, being truly off color, or even down right filthy.  Her appearance of as the host of Saturday Night Live was all thanks to a Facebook campaign, and it shows the power of social media in making things happen.  I have been waiting for the premiere of this show to see how it plays out.  Many times the city featured in a sitcom is the butt of most of the jokes, and I love Cleveland and we can do without the humor at our expense.  So when I was invited to the premier party last night, I jumped on the chance to attend.

The Daily Show With Jon Stewart Mon – Thurs 11p / 10c
Betty White

Daily Show Full Episodes Political Humor Tea Party

The party was held in the Skylight Room at Tower City Center, where I spent most of my days during the film festival.  The rooms were packed with hip folks drinking cosmos and white wine, all Sex in the City style.  I don’t know who was catering the event, but the food was tasty, though a bit uninpired.  Shrimp crostini, caramel onion tarts, crab cakes and roast beef with horseradish mayo were passed and only left me hungry for something more substantial.  There was a screening room, but I never really figured out how it worked.  The room was always packed, and when I turned around,   there was a huge line for the next screening.  I decided to pass, as it debuts tonight and I figured I could wait to see it in the comfort of my own home.

On our way out, we picked up a couple of gift bags.  The door ladies gave us a quizzical look, but didn’t say much.  We figured out that the gift bags were apparantly for the ladies, as they had t-shirts that were definately ladies sized.  So, what do you do with a couple of Hot in Cleveland t-shirts in a Ladies size large?  Why give them away of course.  If you are interested, comment about the party or about the show, on this blog, on our Great Lakes Green Pages Facebook page, or on our Great Lakes Design Collaborative Facebook Page.  I will choose a couple of winners at random and send you the free tee!

And be sure to watch the premiere tonight on TV Land at 10pm!  Comment before Sunday night when I will do a random drawing!

Thanks for your comments!  Our winners are Alicia Y and Michele K.  Thanks for all who entered!

AMP 150 and Thirsty Dog Brewing

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

Most people never even realized that yesterday was Flag Day.  Wile there was little celebration going on in most of the country, AMP 150 was grooving.  In case you don’t know, AMP 150 is the restaurant at the Cleveland Airport Marriott.  First off, while I am a foodie, I am not a food snob.  Still, I probably would not have heard of AMP 150 except for a couple of reasons.  First off,  Chef Cooley introduced his restaurant at an E4S event.  His goal is to create a great restaurant that will draw people from all around the region, and he is likely to do it.  How?  Local foods and fresh ingredients prepared with style.  They are planning a local food farm right there on the hotels property, just so they can produce the food they want to serve right on site.  Now THAT is local and fresh!  The second way I found out about AMP 150 is the way they have learned to embrace social media.  I read about the restaurant on Cleveland Foodie, a local blog, who reviewed the place and was intrigued.  Then I was suddenly connected to them on social media.  So when I heard about the Flag Day Tweet UP and Foursquare Party that they were planning I was all in!  If you have ever wondered what the point of Foursquare is, AMP 150 is showing us how to leverage this social media platform.  First off, they managed to get over 50 people there, which made them the first Cleveland restaurant to give out a Swarm badge.  This is just some Foursquare nonsense that is only of interest to us techno-geeks and social media freaks.  But they go on to offer special discounts for you for every time that you go there and check in on Foursquare.  Your 5th check in will even result in 25% off your entire bill.  When  I talk to social media clients about how they need to be using their Foursquare and other accounts to reach out to clients, this is what I mean.  Everytime someone checks in, it is like a little free shout out by clients to their friends.  The ”mayor” of AMP 150 even gets 25% off their bill, every visit, until they are unseated-a move that will be causing a mini contest amongst us Foursquare fanatics.

Anyhow, I went to the event last night to taste the appetizers, check out the venue and taste some beer from Thirsty Dog Brewing Company. The beers were tremendous.  Brewed locally at their Akron brewery, they are going to give Great Lakes Brewing a run for their money.  As a lover of craft beers before moving to Cleveland (Portland was, and perhaps still is, the capital of micro brews), I am excited to see so many local beer lovers crafting such delicious products.  The only wrong with the event was that I had to try all the beers.  Normally this would not be a problem, except they were tasting 10 different brews.  This is no simple 3.6 Budweiser kind of night.  The beers ranged from light and fruity to dark and chewy and some had quite the high alcohol content.  Luckily, I wasn’t driving.  The only beer I didn’t care for was the Pumpkin Ale, but it may have something to do with the fact that it followed the Raspberry Ale.  I especially liked the Siberian Night (a Russian Stout), the Old Leghumper (a porter) and the Twisted Kilt ( a refreshingly different Scottish Ale).  The appetizers being passed were outrageous.  Duck pate to die for, Artichoke stew, and even a gourmet hotdog with mustard and kraut.  I can’t wait to go back and try the full menu!

Amongst the crowd were a lot of folks who are changing the  local food scene:  Chefs Chris Hodgson and Jeremy Esterly of Dim and Den Sum are the guys who introduced gourmet street food to the region with their cool food trucks; Chef Matthew Mytro and his buddies from Stove Monkeys are the folks who put on the molecular gastronomy event YUMM! at Mercury Lounge; Trevor Clutterbuck of Fresh Fork Market is taking the CSA to a whole new level.  I also got to meet a lot of the social media buddies that I connect with mostly online, like Tony Ramos, and made some new friends, liek Janet Nguyen of Metromix.  Overall, the event was a huge success, the crowds got to try some of Chef Ellis’s food, the beers were delicious, the company was super AND we earned our swarm badge…. jealous?

Do you know the future leaders of the Green Movement?

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

I have seen the future and it is green.  When Cleveland State University built their LEED certified recreation center, the plans for the green roof was dropped out.  Whether is was cost, lack of interest,  logistics, or a little bit of all, the plan to include a green roof was dropped.  It seemed the dream for a lovely outdoor space on the roof of this new building was gone.  Enter Erin Huber and LeeAnn Westfall.  Two Environmental Science students who shared a common love of the planet, they teamed up to revive this lost idea of a green roof in the city.

I don’t want to talk too much about the garden, as I am hoping to get one or both of them to write a guest blog post for me.  What I will talk about is that the future of our city and our planet rests with future leaders like these two strong dynamic women.  When told that this was just not going to happen, they didn’t give up.  They started with a small spaghetti dinner to try and raise funds for the project.  I think this was the eye opener to how hard this was going to be to make happen.  Still, with a lot of time, effort and hard work, they persevered.  Their efforts were rewarded with an opening party and dedication ceremony last week.  They were recognized by proud family members, friends, university staff and students, and even members of city council.  These two lovely ladies posses strength and determination that is little seen in individuals twice their age.  LeeAnn mentioned that there are few CEOs who wear Birkenstocks, but that she planned to be one of the first.  I have no doubt that she will achieve this aim.  She also stated that Erin would change the world, and I believe she is right.

I first met these two charming and dynamic women at the sustainability summit last year.  Their love of the environment and their passion for making things better was evident when we spoke.  I thought to myself, “these ladies will have an impact.”  I am pleased to say that I was right.  Less than a year later, they proudly showed off their newly dedicated Huber-Westfall Garden.  But things haven’t stopped there for these two.  Erin has joined forces with other determined folks to bring a farmer’s market to the downtown area of Cleveland.  Healthy fresh alternatives are now available to students and the general public every week, thanks to this great market.  LeeAnn has started her own consulting company, bringing green roof consulting to NE Ohio.  With the rise of the sustainability movement and increased interest in green roofs, I am sure that she will be a huge success.

Many people look at the state of the world today and become disenchanted or disheartened.  It is easy to see how.  Some thirty or more years ago, environmentalists were determined to change the world for the better.  They were going to stop war, promote peace, use less energy, make the planet greener.  Fast forward to today and we are in a worse state than we were then.  It can sometimes feel like we are mice shouting at lions, when we face the world of big business and progress.  When I look at the passion and the determination of the rising stars of tomorrow, like Erin and LeeAnn, however, I see hope for the planet.  These are the business people of the future.  They understand how we need to marry the business of repairing the environment with the business of making a profit and being successful.  If you have a chance, next time you are near the CSU campus, go up and see the rooftop garden.  And if you ever get the chance to meet these lovely ladies, shake their hand and you can say, “I knew them when…”

The garden overlooks the CSU water tower wind turbine.

A lovely place to relax on campus

Proud family of a future leader

Molecular Gastronomy in Cleveland

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

Last month I attended Yumm!  This was a molecular gastronomy tasting put on by Matthew Mytro and Stove Monkeys.  I really enjoyed the curry cotton candy on chicken skewers and the tempura battered fried egg yolks.  I enjoyed the crazy treats so much, that I was thrilled to hear that they planned on making this a monthly event.  So I got my Facebook invitation for June’s event, and headed right over to Stove Monkeys to buy my tickets.  They are only $7 in advance, so I didn’t hesitate.

June looks to be another great event.  Liquid Nitrogen Poached Ice Cream, Coconut Bubbles, Inside Out Deviled Eggs and Liquid Baked Potato are the featured snacks for the evening.  This time, the bar is getting more involved and creating some crazy cocktails for the evening.  You can look forward to Liquid Nitrogen Banana Foster, Maple & Bacon Old Fashioned, and the Mojito of the Future.  Beverages are extra, but sound so intriguing.  Who wants to join us?  WE plan to arrive early to get the best seats on the patio.  Last month was perfect weather, so I hope we can expect more of the same.

How much fiber do you have?

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

We all have fiber. No, I don’t mean dietary fiber, but rather fiber waste. When we talk fiber waste, we mean things like cardboard, paper and the like. It is a huge problem in the US. Estimates vary, but at least half of all the waste that fills today’s landfill is fiber waste. At the same time, paper and cardboard are a vital commodity that can be bought and sold on the open market. It seems foreign to me that people do not ALL recycle cardboard? I can remember using a bailer at every job I had in retail-going back over 25 years. Since moving to Ohio, though it seems that much of what could be considered a resource is casually dumped into the landfill.

Luckily, there are groups like E4S who are determined to raise awareness and connect people who can change this. Today I attended a fiber waste panel discussion. The room was packed, which made me happy to see so much interest. Let’s face it. We pay for garbage service, but we pay less for recyclables. In fact, sometimes we get paid to recycle. So what is the deal? This was the question that was put to the panel. This panel discussion was moderated by Victoria Avi. The panelists included:

Beau Daane, Business and Recycling Specialist, Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District
Jaca Kaverman, Assistant Executive Housekeeper, Hyatt Regency Cleveland
John Piotrowski, VP of Operations, Green Recovery Group
Janet VonGunten, Specifications Sales Representative, xpedx

In addition, there was a supplier of recycling service pick up and a compactor company. Overall, the discussion was for businesses who have yet to start a recycling program or who are just getting their feet wet, it was filled with great ideas and resources. I even learned a thing or two from the talented and informed panel. Basically, though the idea was this:
Recycle your paper waste. It is the easiest thing to recycle and still most of it goes to landfill.
Cardboard is a valuable commodity and you can get paid for it.
If you are in an office setting, think about partnering with other tenants.
The Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District has a welath of information on how to deal with your waste stream and reduce your impact on the landfill.
Start with reduction before recycling. If you can use less to begin with, you will save money on products AND trash.
Reuse paper products whenever you can.
Engage your staff.
Identify opportunities and use them to benefit your company.
Recycling can help your bottom line and save you some money!
I could go on and on, but we watched this video and I think it says it all:

E4S events are top notch and I highly recommend you try and make it to as many of them as you can! And join the Zero Waste Network.

What are you doing Thursday?

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

For those of you who are wondering what to do to start recycling in your office, here is a great event. I know that one problem many people deal with is just getting started with the whole recycling business. In an office environment, paper and cardboard are the biggest components of the waste stream, and it is easily recycled. Join me at a panel discussion on reducing your waste output, by finding ways to deal with fiber waste:

Below are the details for the event. We have a great panel and a great program to share that will help companies find solutions towards reducing their paper, cardboard and other fiber waste. I hope you can join us as well. If you are interested in volunteering at the event, please let me know. Or, if you have the means and simply want to attend, please click here to register online.

Thank you so much for your continued support!
