Who the heck is TED?

Friday, February 26th, 2010

I spent the morning sitting in the dark with a bunch of people.  And I  loved it.  IT was the TEDxCLE event.  Thanks to the crappy weather and school closings some tickets went unused, and I was able to go to the event.  I was thrilled to hear so many great speakers and some of the cool things that they were doing.  Be sure to subscribe to this blog as I will tell you all about the event in a series of posts over the next few days.  As a teaser, did you know that until about the 1950’s Cleveland had the largest garment district in America, outside NYC?  Did you know that there is a way to help charities get millions of extra dollars, all by writing a letter?  Did you know you can buy a 3 wheeled electric vehicle that is made here in Ohio or that there is a plan to create electricity from the waves on Lake Erie?

Thanks to Susie Sharp for helping to find me a ticket and get me in!  I am glad that I brought my laptop, as I was able to capture all the action.  I did not, however, take my camera, so if you have pictures of the event that you would like to share (that means you Susie) send em to me and I can include them in my posts….

What are YOU doing for Earth Day?

Friday, February 19th, 2010

Have you ever dreamed of making a difference?  It doesn’t just happen, you have to make it happen. Green Fest is a very new event, and a perfect example of how you can get involved and do something cool. This will be just the second year, and the reponse by the community is truly exciting. It started with two Moms having coffee, talking about their passion for recycling and “doing their part.” Wanting to do something to raise awareness and unite the community, they started thinking about putting on an “event” to teach North Ridgeville citizens about eco-friendly lifestyles. And thus, Green Fest was born.  Last year, they planned Green Fest with the help of the Parks and Recreation Dept, and several others who were willing to pitch in and give back. It was a highly successful event for such a small community, and with absolutely no operating budget. Everything was either donated by individuals or organizations that believe in going green. It just goes to show what you can do when you believe in something!  This year, Green Fest 2010 has a tiny budget, a great committee of committed individuals, and lots of support from the community. They hope to get bigger and better each year, delivering the message of environmentalism to all of the southern suburbs.Want to help?  They’d love to have you come to the event, make a donation, or offer any advice or tidbits of information they could use. ll an eco product or offer an environmentally friendly service?  Maybe you can get a table and show off your company.

North Ridgeville’s Green Fest committee is a branch of Friends of the Parks, a non-profit organization of local citizens who share and foster the idea to support and better the parks and recreational areas of North Ridgeville. Gandhi once stated: “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” This quote explains how North Ridgeville’s Green Fest Committee came to be. In April of 2009 five local moms hosted Green Fest to help educate their community about making sustainable choices to preserve their children’s future. With only 3 ½ months of collaboration, Green Fest showcased 20 local North East Ohio earth friendly vendors. Amazed by the impact that the Green Fest 2009 had we decided in August of 2009 to open the group up to recruit local volunteers. Since then we have been joined by several diverse community members. During the last several months our committee has been diligently working to recruit volunteers, vendors, and donations. The Green Fest committee’s current fundraising goal is to raise funding to purchase recycle containers to be installed in each of North Ridgeville’s local parks. Once we have accomplished this goal, we then plan to reassess and research future earth friendly opportunities that can continue to bring North Ridgeville to the fore front of green living. We are currently gathering interested volunteers, vendors, and donations (reusable bags, coupons, samples, advertisements and monetary), and entertainment for this worthy event.

Let’s face it, making a difference is never easy.  But then, nothing worthwhile ever really is.  But if a couple of moms can get together over coffee and start a green revolution in their own town, what can you do?

So many events…so little time…. I love Cleveland!

Friday, February 5th, 2010

I am looking at my calendar and trying to get caught up on some things before it gets too hectic.

Monday ( Feb 8th) I am attending a meeting of the Lake Erie Moose Society.   The Lake Erie Moose Society fosters camaraderie and shares technical advice among NEO Bloggers of all experience levels.  The meeting is at least once a month.  Monday it is at the Barking Spider Tavern at CWRU.  If you are a blogger or thinking about starting one, this is a great group of folks.  I always learn something new, and I have new friends because of this group.

Tuesday night (Feb 9) is the wrap party for Got City Game.  If you don’t know what this is, then you are missing out.  The idea was to promote some of the truly cool things about Cleveland by creating a reality tv show.  We here in Cleveland don’t go for the mainstream, so why not put it out on the web, so everyone can see how cool the NE Ohio region is.  I am so proud of the producers and what they have done with this program.  Tuesday night we will find out who won the scholarship prizes and who won the grand prize-a year of rent free living in Tremont and gift certificates to all the major entertainment attractions around town…  Stop by the Barley  House and find out how you might be involved in the next season, and catch up on all the past episodes online atGot City Game.

Thursday (Feb 11) is a big day.  I will be spending the day at CWRU with the rest of the design committee to help plan out the next Sustainability Summit.  We will be mapping out next year’s summit, reporting on progress from last years summit, and planning the strategic communications for our groups.  Thursday evening is the launch party for Endure, an online exhibition for Red Dot Project.  I am proud to be a fetured artist in the exhibit and can’t wait to see some of the work by other artists.  The evening runs from 5-7pm at environments 4 business, at 515 euclid.  Stop by for a nibble and see some cool art.  My work is all photography on canvas, so I am eager to hear what people have to say about it.  The show will be online shopreddotproject.org through March.

Tuesday of the following week (Feb 16th) is the networking event at E4S, Entrepreneurs for Sustainability. This month’s topic is UNIVERSITIES PUTTING SUSTAINABILITY TO WORK:

Join the E4S Network in February to learn how Northeast Ohio universities are implementing sustainable business practices in their buildings, operations, research, and curriculum. From innovative energy efficiency projects, to green buildings, to cafeteria`s filled with local food, universities in the region are leading the way towards a sustainable economy.

But what else might be possible if all 27 NEO universities – with over 200,000 students and an annual budget of nearly $3 billion – worked together to have an even greater impact? Join the dialog with our panel of sustainability experts from local universities as we explore the present and future of sustainability in higher education.

It is a great group and I encourage you to come and check it out.

Then on Wednesday I am attending a meeting at the Cleveland Film Society.  I am very excited about participating in the Cleveland International Film Festival this year.  This is only my second year, but I had such a great time last year, that I can’t wait for this season to begin!  If you have some time on your hands, I encourage you to give them a call at 216.623.3456 or to sign up online.  When you volunteer you can help out a great cause and you just might get to see a movie that will change your life.  I saw a couple last year that really made me change the way i look at the world, and I hear that this year’s line up is shaping up to be even better!  If you just want to attend, then think about getting an all access pass.  You can see a ton of movie for a great price, and you get lots of perks when you go this route too!  See the trailer and other videos on You Tube.

On Thursday (Feb 18th) is the Social Media Club monthly meeting.  It is another great group and discusses all kinds of ways to use social media to enrich your life.  If you are interested in learning more about twitter, Facebook, or other social media try attending this event of folks who love this form of communication.

Then on Friday (Feb 19th) is the 78th Street Studios Third Friday event.  I always enjoy myself when I go here.   There are tons of great artists to see and so much in one location.  Perfect for those blustry winter evenings when walking the streets of Tremont is a cold proposition:

The hottest new arts center on the west side of Cleveland housed in the former American Greetings Creative Studios building between W 78th and W 80th Streets. Stop in to explore this eclectic mix of world class art galleries, studios, and creative businesses anchoring the west end of Gordon Square Arts District!

You can find them at 1300 W 78th St. or get the mat at their website.

What are YOU doing over the next couple of weeks?  If you have a great event to add, put it here in the comments section!!

More from Andrew Watterson…

Saturday, December 5th, 2009

In case you do not know, Cleveland has a Chief of Sustainability. His name is Andrew Watterson and he reports directly to the Mayor. He was integral in putting together the Sustainability Summit last August and in developing next year’s summit. He sends out a newsletter to members of the summit, and keeps informed about goings on in Cleveland as it pertains to being a Green City on a Blue Lake. Here are some of the things that you should know from this week:

Cleveland is getting a lot of press for its endeveours to get energy from the wind. If you haven’t see these articles, check out
Ohio awards $13 million for wind and solar projects”: by John Funk
Lake Erie wind turbine project spreads beyond Cuyahoga County”: by John Funk and
NorTech carves out role in promoting advanced energy projects”: by Tom Breckenridge

If you aren’t following the Green City Blue Lake blog, you are missing out! They maintain a calendar of events, and there is a great article on the proposed new I-90 bridge, and the efforts of some citizens to add bicycle and pedestrian access. some say it is a crazy idea, as it is a freeway bridge, but that is simply not true! There are nearly 30 other bridges doing the same thing around the country. There is a rally in Lincoln Park tomorrow (Dec 6) at 2pm, and I hope to see you there!

If you haven’t heard, President Obama is going to do what Bush didn’t do, and that is meet with leaders from around the globe to talk about climate change. The event will be held in Copenhagen, and Obama will be in good company. Also in attendance will be our very own Matt Zone, who will represent Cleveland in the National League of Cities. I hope Barak takes the time to learn how it is being done in Cleveland!

Ahead of the summit, a group SustainLane is getting people involved locally. Out of all the cities in the country, Cleveland beat out places like San Francisco and Atlanta to rate as number 2 in the nation. That is high praise indeed! From their newsletter;

Ever since we partnered with Hopenhagen to launch the SustainLane Local Action Challenge, we have been amazed at the outpouring of action from people in communities all over the country. So while we wait with our fingers crossed to see what happens in Copenhagen, let’s take a look at what people are doing on a local level to make their own communities a little greener.

They have a list of ideas for people to in= implement ot help reduce their carbon footprint. They are giving away prizes to those who upload a photo of themselves doing some of the things on the list for their city. Each city has a list that is tailored to their particular regional needs-something that is often forgotten in the discussion of actions that need to be taken. Check out Cleveland’s list and take part!

Lastly, but really firstly, Cleveland has released its report on the August summit. Check it out to find out all the cool stuff that we were involved in. There are some great pictures-my favorite is of Michele Kilroy of the local chapter of USGBC. Find out what you missed and get excited aobut next year!

Cleveland Greenhouse ProjectHelp the Cleveland Greenhouse Project build composting bins at the Trinity Community Garden downtown at East 36th Street and Cedar Avenue in order to experiment with arrangement, mixes and composition of nutrient-rich compost. Bring gloves, shovels, hammers, heavy-duty Staple guns, old newspapers and cardboard boxes, and be ready to have fun while getting a little dirty and learning a lot! We’ll be combining organic food waste, yard waste, cardboard, newspaper and wood chips in order to make a rich compost for next year’s growing season. Food waste and shipping pallets will be donated by the Sanson Company, located at the Northern Ohio Food Terminal.

If you don’t know about the Cleveland Greenhouse Project, you should! It is all about building a great greenhouse that can help provide economic benefit to Cleveland and provide real food to low income urban environments. It is an idea whose time has come!

Art and giving back collide…

Sunday, November 22nd, 2009

I love glass art. I am working on some of my own designs right now! But there is one company who is doing great designs from recycled glass bottles that is really cool. The company is From the Blue Bag. Taking waste out of both the waste AND recycle stream, this company creates cool glass art that is functional. Check them out to see some cool stuff. Upcycling is the purest form of reuse, keeping trash out of the landfill. This company’s products are also great, because after being used for another purpose, they can still be recycled at the end of their second life. They are making a great product, and can be seen in a slew of retail outlets.

They recently moved to their new location at 2085 W. 114th Street in Cleveland, and as a grand opening celebration, they are having a “GIVE BACK” Party on Wednesday, December 2, 2009 from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. This is not just a cool party and celebration, this company is doing even more good. A portion of all sales for the evening will benefit E-CITY—a non-profit that teaches students entrepreneurial, business and life skills to enable economic independence. Given the new world economy that we are in, this is a great cause that is sorely needed, especially in Cleveland. This is an open house, so you can see their cool new digs, and do a little shopping, while doing a little good of your own. Remember, that by buying these eco friendly gift items, you are promoting the local economy as well. Why do you shopping at the last minute, when you could do it here and benefit a good cause, support an environmentally sound company, and have a beverage while you are at it. But do a little giving back of your own, and bring some non-perishable food items to help those who are in need.

Make your holidays Green!

Time to get a little corny.

Monday, August 17th, 2009

As you know, I am now a big fan of farmers markets. Fresh, local produce is fantastic! Moreover, it promotes the local economy by creating jobs and promoting local farmers. Besides, the flavor of veggies grown right here in Ohio, as opposed to shipped while still unripe from California, Texas, or (gulp) New Zealand, is immeasurable. While touring Amish country with my family, I could barely stop myself from buying fresh produce at every roadside stand and country market. I haven’t eaten peaches that delicious in years! I even ate a meal that was little more than tomatoes-they were that tasty!

200px-vegcornThis week, I am looking forward to the Corn Festival at the Gordon Square Farmer’s Market. If you aren’t familiar, the Gordon Square Farmer’s Market was previously known as Ward 17 Market. It is every week, on Saturdays, at the Bethany Presbyterian Church, at 65th and Clinton. This week is the famed “Sweet Corn Festival!” There will be local, roasted, sweet corn and live music. If you have kids, this is the time to bring them down and talk about local foods with them! There will be games to keep them occupied, too! There will be a 50/50 raffle and of course all the regular vendors. Market hours are 9am – 1pm and the Sweet Corn Festival runs from 11am – 1pm. For more information, visit the Local Food Cleveland group. Think about joining (it’s free) to find out more about what is going on in the movement. This group was started by Peter McDermott and Cleveland is lucky to have him help lead the charge for local food in our region. He is a great guy and works hard to grow our local economy by growing local food demand. And to find out about all the farmers markets visit this post. There is one that needs to be added and that is the one starting next month. At the summit, I met LeeAnn Westfall and Erin Huber of CSU. They were responsible for putting a green roof on Rec Center building at CSU. Not to end there they are starting a downtown farmer’s market that will open the first week of September. Watch this space for more information about both of their projects!
